Birding Aboard

You are the “eyes on the water” for bird conservation…so make your ocean bird sightings part of something larger!

BirdLife International estimates one-third of seabirds are now vulnerable or globally endangered. Birding Aboard is a citizen-science project organized by a group of long-distance birding sailors from around the world. Data goes to eBird, a worldwide resource for scientists and conservation groups.

Please join the count and contribute much-needed information about pelagic birds and migrating songbirds!

Rally organizers, promote the event to your fleet! Contact us for customized field guide and birding app recommendations. We also have materials for kids aboard.

Many island-based organizations don’t have funds to purchase or charter boats. Local scientists need island drop-offs or a half-day ride to conduct a survey. Consider offering your captain skills and vessel.

You don't need to be an expert to participate! Simply take digital photos of birds seen while coastal or offshore boating and note the latitude/longitude. We'll help you identify and report your sightings.
